New body styles, diesel power, all-wheel drive available. introductionthe 2014 bmw 3 series lineup expands dramatically with a new gran turismo, a new sports wagon, a new diesel-powered model, and the availability of xdrive all-wheel drive. The sedans were completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, and the 3 series lineup is now in its sixth generation.  the 2014 bmw 3 series gran turismo is larger and roomier than the previous-generation version and is available in all-wheel-drive bmw 328i xdrive and bmw 335i xdrive variants. The diesel-powered bmw 328d sedan comes with the standard rear-wheel drive or xdrive all-wheel drive. All bmw 328d sports wagons come with xdrive all-wheel drive.  as is typical with diesel power, fuel economy is admirable in the bmw 328d sedan and wagon. Rear-wheel-drive 328d sedans are epa-rated 32/45 mpg city/highway, and the 328d xdrive sedan and wagon are rated 31/43 mpg city/highway.  also new for 2014 is bmw assist ecall, an emergency crash notification system, as standard equipment on all its 3 series models, along with 10 years of service. Previously, the ecall services were only available when bundled with certain optional packages.  the 3 series coupe and convertible have been discontinued for 2014, and are replaced by the all-new bmw 4 series. A new high-performance m3 is scheduled to reappear later for 2014, after taking a hiatus for one model year. The 2014 bmw 320i earns an epa-estimated 23/36 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual transmission and 24/36 mpg city/highway with the automatic. All-wheel-drive bmw 320i xdrive models are automatic-only and achieve 23/35 mpg city/highway. This version accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 9 seconds with 8-speed automatic or in just 5. 7 seconds with 6-speed manual. The same feat takes the audi a4 2. 0t 6. 5 seconds. The bmw 328i achieves an epa-estimated 22/35 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual, and 23/33 mpg city/highway with the automatic on both rwd and awd models.  most powerful is the bmw 335i, with a turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6 that makes 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices are the same 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic, with a 0-60 mph time of just 5. 4 seconds with either gearbox. Fuel economy estimates are just 20/30 mpg city/highway with 6-speed manual, but an impressive 23/33 mpg with the 8-speed automatic. Awd models get 20/28 mpg with the manual and 20/30 mpg with the automatic. Premium gasoline is required for all 3 series models.  activehybrid3 is a 3 series model that combines an electric motor and lithium-ion battery with the 335i's 3. 0-liter six-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. It's good for 335 net horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It works well, but it only slightly bests the fuel efficiency of the gasoline-powered models: activehybrid3 is epa-rated 25/33 mpg city/highway. Considering the near-$15,000 price premium, we recommend the 328i or new 328d for the best combination of performance and frugality. Activehybrid3 may beat them in terms of emissions, however.  the 2014 bmw 3 series sedan remains the benchmark among luxury sport compact cars such as the mercedes-benz c-class, audi a4, and lexus is. Each features unique wheels, exterior trim, interior styling, wheels and suspension tuning.  safety features on all 3 series include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front passenger side-impact airbags, full-cabin, curtain-type head protection airbags, abs, stability control, traction control and bmw assist ecall crash notification system. Optional safety features include rearview camera and park distance control. The driver assistance plus package adds side and top view cameras plus several active safety features like blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian warning and collision mitigation. Available xdrive all-wheel drive can enhance handling stability and control in slippery conditions. walkaroundnow in its sixth generation, the 3 series sedan is instantly recognizable as a bmw. Signature design cues include the twin kidney grille, stretched back, slightly wraparound headlamps with double-bezel lamps, short front and rear overhangs and a uniquely shaped side rear window with a distinctive curve in the bodywork known as the hofmeister kink.  sedans are available in luxury, sport and m sport trims. Each has unique exterior trim. Luxury line uses chrome kidney grille bars, a chrome exhaust pipe trim and a multi-spoke wheel design. Sport line comes with black kidney grille bars and a five double-spoke wheel design. The m sport line adds an aero body kit that includes a larger lower front air intake, sculpted rocker sills and different five-spoke wheels.  the sports wagon is decidedly a wagon, but retains a front end nearly identical to the sedans. From the side, it looks boxy, although the gentle curving slope from the top of the roof to the rear bumper softens an otherwise squarish appearance. Like the sedans, the sports wagon is available with luxury, sport and m sport trims.  the new gran turismo bears the least resemblance to the rest of the 3 series lineup. Based on the long-wheelbase 3 series architecture developed for the chinese market, it's 7. 9 inches longer than the 3 series sports wagon with a 4. 3-inch longer wheelbase. It's also 3. 2 inches taller. Not quite a wagon and not really a crossover vehicle, the gt looks big and tall. The gaping maw and fastback silhouette from many angles looks more like a mini version of the 5 series gt than its 3 series relatives. In back, bmw's first active rear spoiler sits atop the gt's shelfy behind, which reduces lift at highway speeds. interiorthe standard interior looks like traditional bmw. Revised v8 brings more power. introductionthe toyota 4runner is a thoroughly modern but traditional sport utility. It excels at off-road capability. The v8 benefits from a more sophisticated variable-valve setup with drive-by-wire, boosting its output to 270 horsepower, substantially more than last year's 235. Last year, the only good reason to opt for the v8 was to pull a trailer, but this year's v8 is a much more compelling upgrade, delivering strong, responsive acceleration performance out on the highway. This is no car-based crossover station wagon deal. It's built on a rugged ladder frame with a solid rear axle. Still, it doesn't ride like a buckboard wagon. Toyota engineers went to great pains to prove that this durable, adventurous configuration need not compromise everyday comfort and convenience. The 4runner is quite comfortable around town and on the highway with a nice ride quality. But hit the dirt, and it's loaded with the latest off-road electronic technology, including hill start assist and downhill assist control. An optional linked shock-absorber system improves handling on the highway. Completely redesigned for 2003, the 4runner represents toyota's best effort at delivering outstanding off-road capability with high levels of comfort and convenience for everyday use.  inside it's roomy and comfortable. An optional third-row seat expands the passenger capacity to seven, but the seat can be folded over or removed for cargo space. The 4runner comes standard with running boards and more upscale body-colored bumpers and lower body cladding. All models come with a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe toyota 4runner is not a small vehicle. It's substantially larger than pre-2003 models. The 4runner is easily recognized by its familiar low roof and high floor. The look is muscular, if not distinguished, and conveys ruggedness. A wide, rounded front end features an aggressive horizontal grille and wide headlamps. Chunky overfenders and cladding on the rocker panels suggest the 4runner is ready to hit the dusty trail. Backing up that contention are skid plates for the engine, transfer case and fuel tank, all of which come standard. We think it has the opposite effect.  4runner's windshield, side windows, and side mirrors are made of hydrophilic glass and repel water like a waxed car or a window that has been treated with rain-x. The glass causes water to form large drops, which are quickly shed by gravity or wind. The side mirrors are angled out to increase the driver's field of view. The available moonroof includes a two-stage wind deflector designed to reduce wind noise when traveling above 55 mph. interiorthe 4runner cabin looks like traditional suv, in spite of some high-zoot features. More important, it's roomy and comfortable. And the quality of materials and they way they fit together is good.  the standard cloth interior is nice, and the cloth seats in the sr5 and sport models are comfortable, with side bolsters to keep the driver in place when cornering or driving off road. All seats offer adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts, and the driver's seat adjusts eight ways. The driver's legs stretch out, rather than down, toward the pedals.  a two-tone dashboard houses the instruments. Gauges illuminate orange, set in three deep binnacles that prevent the front-seat passenger from reading them. The fuel gauge uses an inclinometer for accurate readouts when the 4runner is tilted on an incline. Automatic climate control is standard on all models, while the limited comes with his-and-hers dual-zone temperature controls. The stereo buttons, and particularly the fan, airflow and temperature controls, are big and easy to locate. A display located just above the climate controls reveals time, ambient temperature, and trip data. The mirrors work on the same principal as those big convex mirrors mounted at a corner in an underground parking garage. They may prove helpful when backing up in a busy parking lot because they help the driver pick up on movement. Using them effectively takes some practice, however, and it's hard to distinguish details. Better than the convex mirrors is the optional navigation system.  the navigation system includes a rearview video camera hidden in the rear bumper that projects images on the seven-inch navigation screen when the 4runner is in reverse. The pictures are sharp, even in complete darkness, and cover the area directly behind and a couple of feet on either side of the car. The extreme fish-eye view of the lens makes distances difficult to judge, at least initially. Like the lower tech convex mirrors, the electronic system takes some getting used. We don't recommend using it for maneuvering, but it adds safety by giving the driver a good view of what's immediately behind the vehicle. Vehicle stability control helps steady the gx 470 on slippery turns.  last year lexus refined the gx 470 with a new front-passenger airbag system, improved graphics for the optional navigation system, and a new sport package that combines dynamic body-roll control with a unique appearance inside and out. For 2006, digital lexus link communication becomes available, while minor interior updates enhance both function and appearance. lineupthe 2006 lexus gx 470 is offered in a single, fully equipped trim level 46,535). It doesn't look excessively long on the outside, but it does look tall, especially from the rear, in part because of the vertically oriented tail lamps and other design cues. For the rear it almost looks tippy, which is unfortunate because it's anything but.  the gx 470 shares its basic five-door body shell with the toyota 4runner. Unique rear quarters give the lexus a different visual personality, however. It looks cleaner and more contemporary, a bit more tall-station-wagon compared to the carefully calculated rugged-truck look of the 4runner. Unique grilles and bumpers distinguish the two vehicles and give them their respective lexus and toyota identities, but a more careful examination reveals that they are more alike than different.  adding visual richness to the lexus are its peaky hood and grille combination, along with its nicely integrated body-colored bumpers, fender flares and side moldings. Massive headlamps and high-mounted, complex tail lamps adorn its corners. interiorthe interior of the lexus gx 470 is trimmed in rich leather and bird's-eye maple. It's roomy and comfortable with large, comfortable seats and lots of elbow room. The quality of materials is excellent. Tall side windows afford a good view out, making for an airy cabin.  one of the beauties of driving any lexus is that everything is where it's supposed to be, and everything is clearly labeled. All of the gauges and instruments are large and easy to read, with simple graphics shared by other lexus products. Switchgear and other controls are large, straightforward, elegantly designed and easy to operate.  the available lexus navigation system works well, particularly after it was upgraded for 2005 with improved graphics. An available rear backup camera displays a view of what's directly behind the vehicle on the navigation system's seven-inch lcd screen when reverse is engaged. That can help the driver avoid backing over obstacles, such as a tricycle left in the driveway. It helps greatly when parking in tight spaces. We recommend opting for it.  the optional mark levinson® audio system turns the gx 470 into a concert hall on wheels. And the optional dvd rear-seat entertainment system turns it into a mobile theater for up to six passengers. The second row is roomy and comfortable and easy to get in and out. The second-row bench folds down and is split 60/40 for versatility.  order the optional third row and the gx 470 can seat eight. The third row is suitable for children, but it's pretty hopeless for adults. At least the available rear air conditioning brings improved heating and cooling comfort to third-row kiddies and dogs.  split 50/50, the third-row seats can be folded up out of the way or removed and stored. What starts as a 13 cubic-foot cargo bay can be expanded in steps up to more than 77 cubic feet by folding or removing the lightweight rear seats and then folding the second row as well. That's not a lot of cargo space in the world of suvs, however. Also, the gx 470's cargo door opens from the left side; perfect in japan, but awkward in the u. Its array of onboard electronics is unrivalled in this segment at this price, and all systems work in concert to make this machine come alive, whatever the driving conditions.  the 4. 7-liter v8 delivers world-class smoothness and quietness. At highway cruising speeds it's barely audible. And as heavy as it is, the gx 470 is no slouch in the performance department, capable of full-throttle sprints from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 1 seconds, with a nice v8 intake roar to go with the rush. Toyota's sophisticated electronic vvt-i (variable valve timing with intelligence) improves efficiency and response at all engine speeds. Vvt-i also helps the gx 470 run cleaner, earning the government's stringent ulev-ii (ultra low emissions vehicle) rating.  power ratings are down slightly for '06, to 263 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque, but that's only because the society of automotive engineers (sae) has instituted new test procedures that tend to deliver more conservative numbers. The engine itself, and its performance, have not changed. The 2006 gx 470 is every bit as powerful as the 2005 model.  the gx 470 delivers strong torque for towing. Epa estimates are 15/19 mpg, city/highway. Like the engine, the transmission is very smooth.  the gx 470 handles impressively well for a body-on-frame truck with a live rear axle. Modern muscle car. introductionthe dodge challenger brings muscle car performance and styling to everyday driving. It's an enjoyable car to drive. The challenger harkens back to 1970, and the current generation, launched as a 2008 model, amuses and delights us. Its 3. 6-liter pentastar v6 produces 305 horsepower and 268 foot-pounds of torque. But the challenger is a big car, so even with a 5-speed automatic fuel economy is not its forte: challenger is epa rated 18/27 mpg city/highway.  the challenger r/t rumbles with a 5. 7-liter hemi v8. The v8 is rated at 372 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque with the 5-speed automatic, or 375 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque with the standard 6-speed manual. The hemi uses a multiple displacement feature that switches off cylinders to save fuel, but epa ratings are no better than 16/25 mpg. We think the challenger r/t is a sweet spot in the lineup. It can be used as a daily driver with less intensity than the srt8 (and considerable cost savings) yet it's sportier and more fun than the sxt. Challenger r/t is often compared with the mustang gt and camaro ss, although challenger is a bigger car and a more comfortable cruiser.  the challenger srt8 392 is named after its hemi v8's cubic-inch displacement (even though it's actually 391) and that of the legendary hemi 392 engine of the late 1950s. The 2013 challenger srt8 392 comes with a 470-hp 6. 4-liter hemi v8 that also uses cylinder deactivation technology. Epa ratings are 14/23 mpg. Additional features include a heated steering wheel, three-mode adaptive damping and launch control. We've driven all the models and like all of them. They all have their own merits but there are distinctions.  the cabin is mundane. Like muscle cars of the past, the challenger is based on a sedan (the charger) and the interior borrows heavily from existing materials. It is unanimously praised by on-lookers as a cool-looking car and is as faithful to the original as has been done in recent years.  part of the challenger's appeal comes from its commanding presence. Many of the challenger's parts, systems and structures are shared with the chrysler 300 and dodge charger sedans. It's a big car, just two inches shorter than the charger but wider and lower. The challenger is also about nine inches longer than the ford mustang, and seven inches longer than the chevrolet camaro.  unlike most new cars, the maximum width is carried well out to the ends resulting in a broad, menacing car. The very wide, horizontal grille, spoilers and taillamps accentuate the width, as does a turret-like roof and window treatment, and the haunches over the rear wheels where the roof fairs into the trunk and the character line kicks up. The proportions all seem just right, from the carrier-deck expanse of flat hood larger than most modern pickups, to the foot-high side glass and dark lower body trim, and into the massive rear roof pillars.  the major lines are only part of the equation, with details just as well executed. Where signals rode below the bumper on the '70 this one has fog lamps, and careful sculpting has maintained the classic look without destroying aerodynamic efficiency.  from the side, the srt8 392's 20-inch wheels frame bright red brake calipers and slotted discs, filling large fender openings that are creased along the edges. Hood scoops carry hemi badges on v8 cars and are functional in that cool air goes in or warm air vents to the atmosphere, but they do not feed cold air straight into the engine; the ducts in the spoiler direct cooling air to the front brakes and small winglets at the front wheel openings better refine airflow. The fixed side rear windows do not allow the full open hardtop of the original with its frameless doors but in a nod to that look dodge kept the pillars behind the glass so they aren't so obvious. A bright fuel filler cap finishes off the driver's side. The door handles look retro and stylish, but we found them hard to grab.  out back, there is a full-width panel of red lights with a pair of backup lights wedged in the middle, along with chrome dodge lettering in a font right out of the 1970s. While only the outer pairs of bulbs light for brake and turn functions, the entire width is used for taillights. All models have dual chrome rectangular exhaust outlets in the lower bumper.  paintwork on the cars we saw was very good, as it must be, given the vast surfaces lacking any ornamentation or style lines. The paint feels smooth to the touch and looks great. But, at least in v8 form, the challenger is a muscle car that many insist requires stripes, so plenty of wallpaper is optional. interiorthe interior harkens back to the muscle car.

It's a hop-in-and-go kind of car, easy to master. And it's comfortable. The base model has wind-up windows and manual door locks, and hardly anyone buys it. Upgrading to the corolla le adds power windows and locks, while the xle comes with wood-grain trim. The corolla xrs features a bigger engine, bigger brakes and performance tires for sportier driving dynamics. Leather trim is available on high-level models.  for 2010, corolla comes standard with vehicle stability control with traction control. Overall, the styling is conservative. Fit and finish are at a high level for such an inexpensive car.  the current corolla is bigger than pre-2009 models. The light housings are similar, driven by styling heritage and modern safety standards. In any case, it's immediately recognizable as a toyota, and from behind as a corolla.  corolla s and xrs receive different lower nose and tail sections, the area around the fog lamps bearing a distant similarity to the lexus is, and trunk spoilers. It's a look that works better on the corolla xrs by virtue of its larger wheels. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated.  the corolla is slightly longer than the honda civic. The nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger. The nissan versa, honda fit, and toyota yaris are subcompacts, which are smaller than compact-class cars such as the corolla. interiorthe corolla has a comfortable, pleasant interior. Materials and patterns are understated. The standard cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing. The wood-grain trim on the xle adds visual warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony.  leather upholstery is available on the sport seats in the s and xrs models, though apparently leather is not offered on the xle. Wood grain trim is available on some models, but the faux wood reflects glare more than the standard trim does.  a dash is conventional, framing speedometer and tachometer with fuel and ancillary data. Corolla xle and xrs employ electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Second, it lacks voice recognition and bluetooth. Still, toyota's navigation system is easy to learn to use and it works very well.  the front seats are comfortable, and getting in and out of them is easy. The sport seats in the xrs use heavier bolsters for more support when cornering, though they are not well suited to people with large frames.  the rear seat is apropos for the class. The floor is flat except for a small incline to the back of the console. A sliding-top console comes on upper level models that's appreciated on long drives.  a remote release opens the trunk lid, which springs from the top of the bumper and bisects the taillights for a wide loading space. Cargo space of 12. 3 cubic feet is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. It's epa-rated at 26/35 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 26/34 mpg with the automatic. The 1. 8-liter engine uses dohc and dual variable valve timing with intelligence (vvt-i) to optimize valve timing for the best blend of power, economy and emissions. It uses a timing chain rather than a belt, which usually saves on service costs.  the 2. 4-liter engine that comes on the xrs makes 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It has epa-rated fuel economy figures of 22/30 mpg city/highway with either transmission. It also benefits from dual vvt-i technology. There's no point in pushing the 2. 4 to its redline as it won't go any faster and never gets a whole lot of sparkle to it; it just goes. All models run fine on regular unleaded gasoline.  contributing to the acceleration performance of the xrs is shorter gearing in both transmissions. Regardless of the transmission, the xrs does not like to take off quickly on a rippled surface, and the manual doesn't like being rushed into first gear. The manual shifter is good, not as slick and precise as the honda civic but far ahead of the chevrolet aveo's rubbery arrangement. Although the corolla xrs five-speed automatic has sequential shifting on the console lever, it would benefit from wheel-mounted paddles like those on the honda fit sport.  the standard corolla rides more smoothly than the corolla xrs does. As wheel diameter increases and tire aspect ratio decreases (causing the tire sidewalls to become shorter) so does handling crispness improve and the potential for ride comfort degrade. New v6 and 5-speed automatic improve streetability. introductionthe 2012 jeep wrangler is a game-changer because of its new powertrain that moves jeep out of the dark ages. It's the pentastar v6, new last year to chrysler, named one of ward's 10 best engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an epa-estimated 17 city/21 highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces.  a smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi engine, so it maintains jeep-like industrial strength. The pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop wrangler. The wrangler unlimited corners well. The wrangler unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular wrangler.  the soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing jeep.  even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes. But a lack of neck-snapping acceleration must be compared to what it had before. And if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a jeep. There are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis adding strength but weight. The rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds.  riding a rubicon in oregon's tillamook forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for a vehicle off the showroom floor. Later, another wrangler rubicon scarcely broke a sweat on rocky trails crossing peaks in washington's cascades. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg for us. All wranglers come standard with 4x4 and 6-speed manual transmission, with 5-speed automatic available.  the freedom top, a three-piece modular hard top, is available for all models. The wrangler sport is available in right-hand drive for rural mail carriers. It may be the most recognizable vehicle in the world. Round headlamps, 7-slot grille, wheel flares, removable doors, bolt-on fenders, fold-down windshield. The hardtop is $735 option; it comes off in 3 pieces, like t-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on jeep trails in the northwest in a wrangler rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The body-colored hardtop is new to the rubicon in 2012. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance. Standard colors are available for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. interiorthe jeep wrangler interior was revised and dressed up for 2011. There are no significant changes inside for 2012.  we lived in a hardtop wrangler for a week and it was all good, comfort-wise. Good rear legroom, easy to climb in and out. The rear 60/40 seat folds or can be removed to create 87 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a toyota 4runner.  the pentastar engine block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. And for all the 6. 5-inch size of the screen, with some functions only about 40 percent of the screen is used, tiny little radio words, the other 60 percent says jeep.  the navigation system in the media center is fairly simple in its display. It didn't make any errors on the routes we programmed, although finding the button to enter destination was maddening. It's a jeep-like choice.  we went trail climbing in oregon's tillamook forest with a wrangler rubicon.
